•  How do you determine what goes into each illustration?

•  I ask the people who live in the towns/cities. I try to get information from different age groups so I can represent everyone.

•  How do you determine which town/city to do?

•  When I get a lot of requests for the same town I'll do it. However, very often I'll stay in one area and illustrate 3-5 towns there because people will always request their town after seeing the illustration of the town next to them.

•  Are you going to do other places outside of Rhode Island and Massachusetts?

•  Yes, however my quest is to illustrate all the cities and towns in Rhode Island. It's my home state and I think it's worthy of the recognition.

•  How come you haven't got my town?

•  I'm not being selective, just haven't gotten to it yet.

•  How long does it take to do one illustration?

•  It varies. A town or city with many buildings takes a while because everything has to be straight. Sometimes I'll work on one building for almost a week. Just have to put in every brick and window pane. Mouldings too, are very important. I'll work a good eighty hours on just illustrating, not to mention the research and field work.

•  Where did you get the idea?

•  I was with a friend at her local frame shop and asked the owner what the people liked for pictures of their town. He told me that if I did anything of their town it would sell. So, my friend gave me the grand tour and after taking about eight rolls of film, I started drawing. I wasn't satisfied with just one illustration or even two. I kept drawing until my board was full. Little did I know I was creating a montage or a soon to be collection.

•  What towns are you working on that haven't come out yet?

•  Tiverton, Jamestown, Downtown Providence, Federal Hill.

•  Are you doing any artwork on other things besides cities and towns?

•  Yes, I'm working on a collection of carousel horses.

I'm also working on a couple of children's books.

•  Do you do portraits?

•  Yes and no. I don't do posed portraits; however, I enjoy illustrating people in their own environment. i.e. A man who fishes; he would be in his gear on his boat with tackle, fish, nets, etc. A woman who loves horses; she would be on or around her horse, with crop and saddle, etc. Kids; love doing kids playing, running, laughing, rolling around, etc. I like to catch the heart…
